WELCOME TO

THE HISTORY OF THE JOHN W. HILL FAMILY LEGACY AND EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATIONS.

John W. Hill and Amanda Carmichael Hill arrived in Madison, Wisconsin in 1910. Together they owned and operated The Hill's Grocery Store, which John and Amanda Hill purchased in 1915. John and Amanda purchased three adjacent properties in Madison, Wisconsin, which is now known as The John W. Hill Family Legacy Properties; owned by the Grandchildren of John and Amanda Hill. Attached to the Hill Grocery Store is John and Amanda's stately home. John and Amanda were altruistic and ethical people*. John and Amanda snubbed the KKK when the KKK arrived in Madison, Wisconsin, and the KKK began offering bribe money to small businesses; and John and Amanda fed the hungry during the time of Wars.

The stately home of John and Amanda Hill was originally owned by John Turner (1849-1909), a former slave from Kentucky, and his wife, Martha. Turner was known as the organizer of the Douglass Beneficial Society, a self-help organization, based on the teachings of Frederick Douglass. (John and Amanda's oldest daughter once corresponded with Frederick Douglass,). Turner also founded the Community's first Sunday school. He provided a meeting place for the Beneficial Society by moving a two-story building from downtown Madison, to its current site at 649 E. Dayton Street, one of the properties now known as The John W. Hill Family Legacy Properties.
